As of May 20, 2024, South Africa has officially introduced a digital nomad visa (gazette), providing a new pathway for remote workers to live and work in the country. This initiative aims to attract digital nomads to boost the local economy, offering a unique opportunity to explore South Africa’s diverse landscapes and cultures while continuing professional activities remotely.
South African Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
To qualify for the South African digital nomad visa, applicants must meet several criteria:
- Valid Passport (min. 3 months upon arrival)
- Evidence of remote work (contracts or employment verification)
- Minimum annual income of ZAR 1 000 000 (about EUR 50 000)
Application process
While the official application process details are yet to be fully released, the following steps outline what you can expect based on similar visa applications:
- Gather Required Documents: Prepare all necessary documents, including your passport, proof of income, proof of remote work, criminal background check, and accommodation details.
- Visa Appointment: Schedule an appointment at a South African embassy or consulate in your home country. Note that applications cannot be submitted within South Africa initially.
- Submit Application: Attend your visa appointment with all required documents. Ensure you have both originals and copies.
- Pay Fees: The visa fee details are not yet available but will be updated once the South African government releases more information.
- Wait for Approval: After submitting your application, wait for a few weeks for the visa approval. Once approved, you can make travel arrangements to South Africa.

Duration and Tax Implications
The visa initially allows for a one-year stay, with potential for renewals. If you stay in South Africa for more than six months within a 36-month period, you must register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and pay local income taxes. For stays under six months, you can apply for a tax exemption.
